Monmouth has period town houses with long, enclosed back gardens, often lined with tall hedges and shaded by mature trees. A lawn in those conditions can struggle, and mowing a narrow strip between borders is rarely enjoyable. Artificial grass can give you an even, green surface that suits the proportions of the garden, as long as it is installed on a base built to last.
We start by looking at the garden with you. Edges, steps, borders and access all matter, and so does what the lawn is for. Then we explain the work in plain terms and agree what will be done.
Where the Wye and Monnow meet, many gardens are walled or hedged and look right when neat. Tall hedges and large trees keep light off the grass, and the lawn thins out beneath them. Artificial turf does not rely on sunshine, so a shaded stretch can stay green and usable through the year without reseeding or feeding. It gives a dependable lawn. Real grass in the same spot rarely manages it.
Because Monmouth gardens are often long and narrow, the layout matters. We work out where the turf runs, how it meets paving and borders, and where a joint would sit least visibly. Clean, straight edging helps a period garden look intentional rather than patched together, and it also protects the lawn edge from being trampled. That small detail makes the whole lawn look finished.
Access to a town house garden can be limited, so we plan how soil and materials will travel before work starts. The old turf is lifted, the ground is dug to depth and the sub-base is compacted in layers, with a weed membrane and a thin levelling layer on top. Taking care at this stage protects paths, walls and borders that are already there.
The turf is cut to your Monmouth garden, laid with the pile in a single direction and joined neatly. We fix it along edging, brush it up and take away the waste. Drainage is checked throughout, because older gardens can hold water, and a flat, firm base is only worth having if rain has somewhere to go. You can then use the lawn right away.
Hedge clippings and leaves can land on the grass, so brushing and a quick sweep keep it looking clean. If your hedges are overgrown, we also trim them, which lets in more light.
