Barry has a good mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces and later estates, and many of the gardens carry tall conifers and Leylandii that have outgrown their spot. Salt-laden wind off the Bristol Channel adds its own strain on trees. We provide tree surgery across the town, including sectional removals, reductions and clearing deadwood, and we look at each tree on its own merits.
If you are not sure whether a tree needs trimming back or taking out altogether, we will look at it with you and explain what we would do. We also cover Penarth, Rhoose, Dinas Powys and Sully, so those nearby villages are covered as well as Barry itself.

A Leylandii or other fast conifer planted as a screen can become a wall of dark foliage within a few years, blocking light and pushing against fences and drains. In Barry these trees are common, and homeowners often ask whether they can simply be cut back. Sometimes a reduction works, but a conifer cut back into bare wood may not regrow, so we are straightforward about what is realistic.
When a conifer has to come out, we take it down from the top in sections, which is safer in the tight gardens between Barry's terraced houses. The trunk and stump can be cut low, and we can talk through options for the stump. Large volumes of brash are chipped or taken away, which for conifer work is a big part of the job.

Exposure to the sea affects how trees grow in Barry. Strong winds near Barry Island and the old docks can leave trees lopsided, with crowns heavier on the sheltered side, and salt scorch can thin out leaves on the windward face. A tall tree like that can become a risk in a gale, so a sensible reduction can help balance the crown and lessen the sail effect.
Before we cut, we check that the tree is not protected by a Tree Preservation Order and that your house is not within a conservation area where notice to the council is required. We also look for nesting birds, since gulls, pigeons and garden birds all use trees through the spring. If a nest is active, we explain the options and the work may need to wait.
Winter gales can snap limbs or bring a tree across a Barry garden or road. If something is threatening a house or blocking access, we treat it as an emergency call-out and make it safe as a first step. Whatever the job, we take away the timber and green waste and leave the garden tidy, so you finish with a clear space rather than a pile of branches to sort out yourself.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.

Most trees are perfectly safe, but certain signs suggest a tree is weakened, and knowing what to look for helps you act before something falls.

Stay calm, keep clear of the tree and any cables, and call for help, because a fallen tree can still be unstable and dangerous long after the wind drops.
Read the guide →Often the height can be brought down, provided there is still green growth left, as Leylandii do not usually shoot again from bare wood. We would look at the hedge, show you how much can safely be cut, and tell you honestly if removal is the better option.
Salt and wind can stress trees and shape their growth, so crowns near the sea are often uneven. A careful reduction can balance the weight and lessen wind load. We check each tree for dead wood and weak joints, and recommend work only where it is needed.
We can cut the stump close to the ground and talk through what you would like done with it. Some people leave it to rot or plant around it, others want it dealt with fully. Tell us when we visit and we will explain the choices before any work begins.
Tell us what needs doing and where. We will come back to you, or call 07766 919630 if it is urgent.
