This Barry front garden has big evergreen hedges and shrubs crowding the path to a red-brick house. The photo shows the growth before we cut it back: dense foliage over the stone steps, dry grass at the edge and a satellite dish just above the leaves.

The broad-leaved hedge on the right has spread outwards until it leans over the stepping slabs, and a yellower shrub beside it has grown tall and ragged. Behind them, taller stems reach up past the lamp post. Dry stalks fill the space between the shrubs and the house wall, which is another job to clear.
With hedges this size we work in stages. We take the top down to an agreed height first, then bring each face back to a straight line so the steps and door are clear. Broad-leaf evergreens such as laurel take a hard cut better than conifers, but we still check for nesting birds before starting. The cuttings are loaded up and the steps swept, so the front of the house looks tidy when we leave.
