Project — Hedge Trimming

Hedge and Conifer Trimming in Abertillery

This Abertillery project covers two settings: a back garden where a large conifer and rounded shrubs crowd a small seating corner, and a narrow lane lined with tall, leafy hedges beside timber fencing. Both needed height and width brought back under control. The photos show the growth as we found it, so you can see what we were dealing with.

What the back garden needed

The first photo shows a tall conifer leaning out over a paved corner, with a rounded shrub on one side, a clipped hedge on the other and a birch above. Conifers like this are trimmed little and often, because they will not regrow from bare brown wood, so we only cut into the green growth. The aim is a firm, upright shape rather than a hard cut back that leaves holes.

Rounded shrubs and clipped hedges are easier to deal with. We work around them with hand shears or a powered trimmer, taking the top level first and then the sides, and we sweep the paving and gravel when we finish so the seat can be used again without picking leaves out of the corners.

Working beside a narrow lane

The second photo shows a lane squeezed between a timber fence and tall hedging, with trees leaning in overhead. Growth like this narrows the way through and rubs against fences and gates. Cutting back from the lane side means we keep the path clear while we work, and the cuttings are gathered up rather than left to block it.

Before starting on any hedge we look for nesting birds, and in the breeding season we may need to leave a section alone until the young have gone. On a boundary like this it also helps to know whose hedge it is, so that neighbours are kept informed and nobody is surprised by the noise or the ladder.
