How Much Does a New Garden Patio Cost?

The cost of a patio depends on its size, the paving you choose, the ground beneath it and how easily materials and waste can be moved.

Why a patio has no standard price

People often expect a simple figure per square metre, but a patio is more than the slabs on top. Much of the work, and much of the cost, is hidden underneath: digging out, building a firm base and shaping the surface so water runs away. Two patios of identical size can involve very different amounts of that hidden work. That is why we do not name a number in an article. What we can do is explain what changes the cost, so that you can compare quotations sensibly and know exactly which questions to ask the people who offer them.

Size, shape and layout

Bigger patios need more material, more excavation and more time, which is straightforward. Shape matters too. A simple rectangle needs fewer cuts than a curved edge, a patio with steps, or one that wraps around a corner of the house. Every cut slab takes time and creates waste that has to be taken away. Features such as raised beds, seating walls, borders and edging add further work. Thinking carefully about how you will actually use the space helps keep the design sensible and avoids paying for areas that will rarely be used once the novelty wears off.

Patio Construction in South Wales

The paving you choose

Paving is usually the largest single material cost, and it varies widely. Sandstone-look slabs, porcelain and natural stone all differ in price, in thickness and in how they are laid. Porcelain tends to need careful handling and cutting, while natural stone is heavy and varies from slab to slab. Within each type there is a wide range of grades and finishes. It is worth looking at samples in daylight and asking what is included, since slabs, adhesive, jointing material and delivery can all appear as separate items in a quotation.

Ground, base and drainage

A durable patio needs a compacted sub-base and a gentle fall so water drains away from the house. If the ground is soft, clay-heavy or full of old roots and rubble, more excavation and more base material are needed. Sloping gardens, common in valley terraces, may need levelling, retaining edges or steps. Good drainage matters in the wet Welsh climate. Skimping on the base is the commonest reason a patio sinks, rocks or holds puddles after rain, so this is not the place to cut corners, even though it is the part nobody sees.

  • Depth of excavation and type of soil
  • Amount of compacted base material
  • Fall for drainage and any extra drains
  • Retaining edges, steps or levelling

Access, waste and the old surface

Getting heavy slabs and sand to the back garden is a big factor. Narrow passages and terraced houses mean carrying materials by hand, which takes longer than tipping them straight from a vehicle. Removing an old patio, turf, concrete or soil, and disposing of it responsibly, also adds time and extra loads. Tell us about gates, steps and parking when you ask for a quotation. It saves surprises on the day, helps us plan sensible delivery times and keeps the work moving smoothly from start to finish.

Finishing touches and timing

Pointing, edging, neat joins at the house wall and tidy borders are the details that make a patio look professional. Think too about extras, such as lighting, planters or a path to the lawn, and whether you want the work done before or after fencing or artificial grass goes in. Late spring and summer are popular for patios because the ground is dry, but good work is possible in other seasons. Booking ahead for the weather window you want is sensible, especially if you have a date in mind for a gathering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because the hidden work varies: excavation, base depth, drainage, access and waste removal differ from garden to garden, as does the choice of paving. Quotations that look similar may include very different amounts of preparation, so check what each one covers. We are happy to explain more when we visit.

Not necessarily. Some fixed costs, such as getting equipment and materials to the site, are spread over a larger area. But larger patios also need more base, more paving and more time, so the total always rises with size. We are happy to explain more when we visit.

You can, but a patio needs a deep, well-compacted base and accurate levels, and mistakes show later as sinking or puddles. Heavy slabs are also awkward and risky to lift. Many people prefer to have the groundwork done professionally. We are happy to explain more when we visit.

It depends on the size, ground and access. Excavation and base come first, then laying and pointing, and weather can interrupt. After seeing the garden, we can give you a realistic idea of timing before you decide to go ahead. We are happy to explain more when we visit.
