Merthyr Tydfil is a large valley town with an ironworks past, Cyfarthfa Castle and its park, and the Brecon Beacons rising to the north. Terraces and hillside gardens fill much of the town, and big boundary trees stand in many of them. We provide tree surgery across Merthyr, from reducing a single heavy limb to taking down a full-sized tree.
Our work includes sectional felling, crown reductions, deadwood removal and clearing storm damage. We also cover Dowlais, Treharris, Troedyrhiw and Pontsticill, so the villages around Merthyr, as well as the town itself, can be reached without difficulty, and we are happy to look at trees on the hillsides.

In Merthyr Tydfil, large trees often grow along garden boundaries, where their roots and branches reach into a neighbour's plot. These trees can be difficult, because a decision about one affects two households. We suggest talking to your neighbour before we start, and we can explain to both sides what the work is, why it is being done and what it will look like.
Where a tree has to be reduced or removed, we do it in controlled sections, lowering each piece rather than dropping it, so that fences, sheds and planting are protected. If it is shared or the ownership is unclear, we will want that settled first. It is a small step that saves a lot of difficulty once the branches are on the ground.

Hillside gardens in Merthyr mean the ground is rarely level. A trunk may lean, and a falling piece could roll. We plan the order of cuts and the rope work to keep everything under control, and we look at what is below the tree before climbing. Access may be limited to steps or a narrow lane, and we talk this through at the first visit. Merthyr Tydfil has many such gardens, so it comes up often.
Parts of Merthyr lie within conservation areas, and some trees carry Tree Preservation Orders, particularly near historic sites and parks. We ask the local council before cutting and explain what is needed. We also look for nesting birds, which use mature trees in gardens and on the hillsides, and we wait if a nest is in use, even if that means returning at a later date.
With high ground to the north, Merthyr Tydfil can see strong winds and heavy rain, and these bring down branches or whole trees across gardens, lanes and roofs. If a tree is a danger to a property or blocks access, we treat it as an emergency call-out and make it safe first. We always take away timber and green waste afterwards and leave the area tidy.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.

Most trees are perfectly safe, but certain signs suggest a tree is weakened, and knowing what to look for helps you act before something falls.

Stay calm, keep clear of the tree and any cables, and call for help, because a fallen tree can still be unstable and dangerous long after the wind drops.

We can work on trees on private land close to the park, provided you own them or have the owner's permission. Trees inside the park itself are not ours to cut. Where protection might apply, we check with the council first.
We take it down in sections, roping each piece and lowering it to the ground. We check what is beneath, including paths, planting and fences, and where needed we protect them. Planning the cuts beforehand is what keeps the job controlled.
