Merthyr Tydfil is a big valley town, and its gardens range from small terrace yards to wide hillside plots with tall boundary trees. Whatever you have, a patio can give you a flat, firm spot to enjoy it. We design and build new patios and paved areas for homes right across Merthyr and the neighbouring communities.
Each job begins with measuring the ground and ends with a neat, well-drained surface. We also cover Dowlais, Treharris, Troedyrhiw and Pontsticill, with the Brecon Beacons rising to the north. Tell us what you want from the space and we will plan around it.

A lot of Merthyr gardens run up or down the hillside, so most patios involve a little engineering. We establish how much fall there is, decide whether to cut in, build up or step the paving, and plan retaining edges and steps so the finished area is stable. Doing this properly at the start keeps the patio safe and flat. Every Merthyr Tydfil garden has its own fall, so measuring first matters.
Where there is enough room, hillside plots can make memorable patios, with a raised view over the valley and a sheltered seat against a bank. We help you work out where the sun falls, how to reach the area from the house and how to keep it comfortable when the wind picks up off the mountain. Our job is to turn that slope into something comfortable to use.

Large boundary trees are a feature of many Merthyr gardens. They give shelter and privacy, but roots near the surface and heavy leaf fall can cause trouble for paving. We inspect the ground before digging, avoid cutting major roots where we can and may recommend moving the patio a short way to keep it clear. Around Merthyr Tydfil, mature trees often sit right on the boundary line.
Weather rolling off the Beacons brings rain, frost and wind, so the base has to be right. We dig to firm ground, compact a sub-base in layers, bed the slabs on mortar and lay to a gentle fall for drainage. That is the foundation of a Merthyr patio that stays level and dry throughout the year. That is the detail that matters most in Merthyr Tydfil weather.
Sandstone-look paving, porcelain and natural stone all suit Merthyr homes, from stone-fronted terraces to newer houses on the hillside. We bring samples so you can judge colour and texture in your own garden light. Once laid, the joints are pointed, the edges tidied and the waste cleared away, leaving you a patio ready to use. Neat finishing is part of every Merthyr Tydfil job we do.

Porcelain offers a consistent, low-maintenance surface, while natural stone brings variation and character, and both depend on a properly built base.

The cost of a patio depends on its size, the paving you choose, the ground beneath it and how easily materials and waste can be moved.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →In most cases, yes. We measure the slope, then create a level area by cutting back, building out or stepping the paving, adding a retaining edge where soil needs holding back. We explain the approach on site before anything is agreed.
It might. Roots can lift paving, and leaves can leave surfaces damp and slippery. We check the ground before digging and keep the base clear of major roots where possible. If tree work would help, we can talk through the options.
Most damage comes from water getting into a weak base. We build a thorough, compacted sub-base, bed the slabs properly and lay them to a fall so water drains away. A solid foundation is what keeps the surface level through winter.
