If you want a proper place to sit outside, a well-built patio is the foundation for it. We design and lay new patios and paved areas for homes in Abergavenny, from period terraces and villas near the centre to the newer estates on the edge of town, with the Sugar Loaf and the Blorenge as a backdrop.
Every patio starts with the ground, not the slabs. We mark out the shape with you, dig out the area, build a compacted base and lay the paving to a gentle fall so rain runs away from the house. We also cover Llanfoist, Govilon and Crickhowell.

Most of the work on a patio is out of sight. In Abergavenny we dig out the turf and topsoil, take the ground down to a firm layer and then build up a sub-base in stages, compacting each one so it does not settle later. A thin shortcut here is the usual reason paving sinks, rocks or grows weeds between the joints.
Gardens near the Usk valley can hold water in wet weather, so drainage matters. We set a slight fall away from walls and doors, keep the finished level below the damp-proof course, and talk through where rainwater will go before any slab is laid. If a spot looks like it will stay soggy, we will tell you plainly. Once the base is laid and checked, we bed the slabs on mortar so each one sits solid underfoot.

Plenty of houses here are period terraces and villas with stone and brick that deserve a sympathetic finish. Sandstone-look paving blends in well, natural stone gives an authentic feel, and porcelain suits a cleaner, modern line. We bring samples where we can so you see the colour in your own light, because slabs look different on a damp grey morning than in a showroom.
Tidy edges make or break a patio. We cut neatly around house walls, steps and borders, and point the joints so they stay firm and easy to sweep. Mature garden and hedgerow trees are common in Abergavenny, so we plan around roots and falling leaves, and leave the area clear of rubble and waste when we go. You will not be left with a pile of offcuts or a muddy trail across the lawn.
Tell us how you will use the space, whether that is a table for summer evenings, a sunny corner by the kitchen door or somewhere for the children and the dog. We will visit your Abergavenny garden, look at the levels and the access, and explain the options in plain terms so you can decide what suits the house and the budget.

Porcelain offers a consistent, low-maintenance surface, while natural stone brings variation and character, and both depend on a properly built base.

The cost of a patio depends on its size, the paving you choose, the ground beneath it and how easily materials and waste can be moved.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Often, yes. A slope usually means either cutting into the bank or building up level ground, sometimes with a retaining edge or steps. We look at the levels on site, explain which approach makes sense and make sure water still drains away from the house.
Most ordinary garden patios do not, but there are exceptions, such as conservation areas, listed homes or raised platforms. Because Abergavenny sits on the edge of the national park, it is wise to check with the council first. We can tell you what to ask.
Any good paving works if the base and drainage are right. Sandstone-look and natural stone grip well and age nicely, while porcelain is very easy to keep clean. Shaded gardens can go green, so we suggest a surface you will not mind brushing down now and then.
