Back gardens in Abertillery are rarely flat or large, which is exactly why a well-planned patio makes such a difference. We build new patios and paved areas that turn a small, awkward slope into a level, usable space, using careful measuring, a solid base and paving chosen to suit the house and the street.
We work with the long terraced streets of the Ebbw Fach valley in mind, where access can be tight and space is precious. We also cover Brynithel, Cwmtillery, Blaina and Six Bells. Tell us about the slope and the steps you already have, and we will suggest a layout that suits.

A typical terrace garden here drops away from the back door, so the first job is deciding how to deal with the fall. Sometimes we cut into the bank and form a small retaining edge, and sometimes we build up a level platform. Either way, we measure properly before we dig so the finished patio sits comfortably against the house wall. We keep the shape simple so it stays easy to build and easy to look after.
Steps are often part of the answer in Abertillery. A neat flight of paved steps linking the patio to the upper lawn or path can make a steep garden far easier to use, and it helps the ground look intentional. We plan these with you at the start, so the levels, edges and drainage all work together. Good steps also give the lawn or planting above a clear edge to work against.

Rain comes down hard in the valley, and water running off the hillside has to go somewhere. We lay every patio with a slight fall away from the property, think about where the runoff will end up, and avoid sending it towards a neighbour's wall or your own back door. A little thought at this stage prevents damp and puddles later. In Abertillery, we also avoid leaving low spots where rain can sit.
Underneath, a compacted sub-base does the heavy lifting. We excavate to a firm layer, build up and compact the base in stages, then bed the slabs and point the joints. Sandstone-look and porcelain paving both cope well with wet weather, and the surface is easy to keep clean with a stiff brush. Wherever the patio meets a wall or steps, we finish the joint carefully so the whole area looks neat and lasts.
Many Abertillery gardens can only be reached through the house or a narrow back lane, so we plan deliveries and spoil removal carefully. We keep the work area tidy, protect paths and borders where we can, and take the waste away when the job is done. Tell us about your access and we will talk through how we would tackle it.

Porcelain offers a consistent, low-maintenance surface, while natural stone brings variation and character, and both depend on a properly built base.

The cost of a patio depends on its size, the paving you choose, the ground beneath it and how easily materials and waste can be moved.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Yes. Even a modest yard can take a neat paved area with room for a table and chairs. We keep the design simple, make good use of the space and finish the edges cleanly against walls, steps and any borders you want to keep.
We plan for it before starting. Paving and base material are usually moved in by hand through the house or along a back lane, in manageable loads. We will ask about access when we visit so there are no surprises on the day.
It will if the base and fall are right. We build a compacted sub-base, lay the slabs to a gentle fall away from the house and think about where water runs off the hillside, so the surface drains rather than pools.
