Cardiff has some of the leafiest suburbs in Wales, with big Victorian and Edwardian houses, mature street trees and gardens that back onto parks and rivers. A patio is often the place where all that greenery gets enjoyed. We build new patios and paved areas across the city, from compact town gardens to larger suburban plots.
Each one is built from the ground up with a proper base and paving laid to a fall. We also cover Llandaff, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, St Mellons, Pontprennau and Penylan. If you have a particular corner of the garden in mind, we will happily look at it with you.

Mature garden trees and conifers are a feature of Cardiff, and they shape how we build. Roots close to the surface can heave rigid paving, so we inspect the ground first, keep excavation clear of major roots and sometimes recommend a different position for the patio. Falling leaves also matter, so we choose surfaces that sweep easily. Each garden is different, so we take care to look before we dig.
Larger Victorian and Edwardian houses often come with generous gardens and good garden walls. We can design a patio that sits comfortably against the house, with steps down to the lawn, clean edges at the walls and borders, and enough room for a table for the whole household without crowding the plants. We can plan this with you before any work begins.

Building a patio properly takes more labour underground than on show. We excavate to firm ground, add a sub-base and compact it in layers, then bed the slabs on mortar and set them to a slight fall away from the property. This is the stage that stops sinking, rocking slabs and water pooling against the house. Across Cardiff, we see the same pattern: a good patio is mostly about preparation.
City gardens can be tight, with limited access and neighbours close by. We plan deliveries and spoil removal so the work is as tidy and quiet as it can be, protect paths and lawns where possible, and clear everything away at the end. We can also break out an old patio that has reached the end of its life. Cardiff streets are busy, so we try to be considerate with parking and noise.
Parts of Cardiff are conservation areas, and a few homes are listed, so it is worth checking whether any rules apply to your garden before work begins. We can point you in the right direction. On materials, sandstone-look paving, porcelain and natural stone all suit city gardens, and we will happily talk through the differences with you. We keep you informed throughout.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Cardiff.
Patio ConstructionWe laid new grey paving slabs in a narrow Cardiff garden, with timber-edged gravel beds and a membrane-lined side strip.

Patio ConstructionWe cleared the old paving at the back of a Bridgend house, compacted the base and stacked new slabs ready for laying.

Patio ConstructionWe replaced the front lawn of a red-brick terraced house in Neath with dark grey paving and a pale border of edging stones.

Porcelain offers a consistent, low-maintenance surface, while natural stone brings variation and character, and both depend on a properly built base.

The cost of a patio depends on its size, the paving you choose, the ground beneath it and how easily materials and waste can be moved.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →They can. Roots near the surface may lift paving over time. We look at what is growing close by, avoid cutting major roots where we can and may suggest moving the patio slightly. If tree work would help, we can advise on that too.
Yes. We plan how materials come in and spoil goes out, often moving it by hand through the house or side passage. We keep the working area tidy and take all the waste away, so the garden is left ready to use.
Ground-level paving is usually fine, but conservation areas and listed properties can have extra rules, especially for raised or structural work. It is wise to check with the council before starting. If you are unsure what to ask, we can help.
