Cardiff has plenty of mature trees, from street trees to the large specimens in Victorian and Edwardian gardens, with the Taff and Ely rivers and the city parks adding to the green feel. Big trees close to houses are common, and so are tall conifers in suburban plots. We provide tree surgery across the city, from careful reductions to full removals.
If you are unsure whether a tree needs work, we will come and look at it with you. We cover Llandaff, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, St Mellons, Pontprennau and Penylan as well as the centre, so tell us your address and we will confirm.

Large Victorian and Edwardian houses in Cardiff often have old trees in the garden that were planted with the property, and some have grown to a size the plot can hardly hold. Lowering the height of a crown or removing a few heavy limbs can ease the pressure on roofs, drains and walls, and let light back into rooms. Each tree is judged on its own condition.
Where a tree has to come down altogether, we do it in sections with ropes, which keeps greenhouses, patios and neighbouring fences safe. City gardens often have limited access, so we look at how timber will be moved out. We will also tell you if there are cables nearby or a boundary that needs a conversation first, and where a neighbour is affected we suggest letting them know beforehand.

Parts of Cardiff lie within conservation areas, and some individual trees carry Tree Preservation Orders. In a conservation area you often need to give the council notice before cutting a tree, even one in your own garden. We check this through the local council and explain what is required, so that the work is lawful and you are not caught out later.
We also check for nesting birds in spring and summer, and if a nest is active, we leave it and discuss when to return. Suburban conifers are another regular job. A tall conifer can sometimes be reduced if there is enough green growth, but it cannot be cut back to bare brown wood, and some are better taken down in sections from the top, and we say which applies before we start.
City trees can come down just as easily as country ones, and a fallen limb across a Cardiff road, garden or parked car needs dealing with quickly. If a tree is threatening a property or blocking access, we treat it as an emergency call-out and make it safe first. Once the work is done, we take away timber and green waste and leave the site tidy for you.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.

Most trees are perfectly safe, but certain signs suggest a tree is weakened, and knowing what to look for helps you act before something falls.

Stay calm, keep clear of the tree and any cables, and call for help, because a fallen tree can still be unstable and dangerous long after the wind drops.
Read the guide →If the tree is protected by an order, or stands in a conservation area, you usually do need to. Rules vary by tree and location. We check with the council before any cutting and explain what is required, so that you know where you stand.
Yes, though there may be extra considerations such as traffic, parked cars or the need to close a lane for a short time. We look at the situation on site and agree how to carry out the work safely, with the right arrangements made first.
It depends on why it leans. A tree that has leaned slowly for years may be stable, while one that has moved recently, or has lifted soil at the base, is a warning sign. We look at the roots and trunk before suggesting reduction or removal.
