This Pontprennau job was a large conifer standing right beside a paved patio and a timber fence. The photo shows the tree towering over everything, with one of us on a ladder partway up its side, a chainsaw resting on the paving, and low sun lighting the face of the tree.

The sheer height and width of the tree is the main thing the photo shows. A conifer this size is usually reduced from the outside edge inwards, taking back the sides and top in steps. The aim is to leave green foliage on every branch, because these trees do not regrow from bare brown wood, and a cut that goes too deep cannot be undone.
The patio and decking at the foot of the tree mean care is needed with every branch that comes off. Heavy cuttings are lowered rather than dropped, and the paving is swept at the end. On a job like this it is also sensible to look for nesting birds before starting, and to check for any protection order with the council.
