These two photos show a Blackwood front-garden tree being cut back on a sunny day. In the first, one of us is up a ladder at the top of the crown with a saw while the orange chipper stands in the foreground. In the second, the work is done and the branches lie on the ground.

The first photo shows a tree already stripped to short, pruned stubs at the top, with leafy growth still lower down. The ladder leans on the trunk and the work is clearly in progress. Taking a crown back like this is done branch by branch, cutting to a main stem, and it suits trees that already have a rounded shape that suits it.
The second photo shows the finished shape: a leafy lower trunk and a cluster of cut ends at the top, with a heap of green branches around the base and the chipper waiting. In a cul-de-sac like this, leaving cut material lying about is not an option, so branches are chipped and the drive and verge swept clean before we leave. Check timing, because cutting during the nesting season should be avoided.
