This Bedwas job was tidy work in a tight space. The photo shows one of us standing on the paving beside a garage wall, using a petrol hedge trimmer to cut back thick evergreen growth beside a green fence, with a long ladder propped nearby for the taller branches.

The paved area is narrow, with a brick wall, a garden gate and a fence close on every side. That affects how we cut. Growth is trimmed back in stages, loose clippings are caught before they scatter over the paving, and the ladder is footed on firm slabs rather than soil. A small job can take careful setting up when there is little room to step back and look.
The photo shows the ladder open on the slabs and the wall and gate close behind it. Evergreen growth like this is better taken back lightly and often, cutting only into green leafy wood, because many evergreens will not sprout again from bare brown stems. Clippings are swept up and removed, leaving the paving clear, and any birds' nests found are left alone.
