This Cardiff photo catches a garden clearance while it is still under way. The back garden had been left to grow, with long grass and weeds across the lawn and between the old paving. One of us is working across the middle with a petrol brushcutter, and the cut ground in front shows where the job has reached.

The mown strip in the foreground is visibly shorter than the tufty grass behind it, which gives a clear before-and-after line within a single picture. Beyond that, the garden has a concrete block wall on the right, a timber fence on the left, a low stone retaining wall and a path of old flagstones heading towards the house. Bare winter trees and a patch of green shrub stand at the far end, and a few scattered boards and posts lie among the undergrowth.
The usual order is to cut the growth down first, then rake up and bag the cuttings, then sort out any rubbish and anything that needs to be cut up and carried away. Only then can you see the true ground level, paths and walls underneath. Once a garden is clear, the owner can decide what happens next, whether that is a lawn, new fencing, a patio or simply regular upkeep. Starting from open ground makes every one of those choices easier to price and plan.
