These two photos show the same small back garden in Pontypool, first part-way through clearing and then finished. The yard behind the terrace was matted with weeds and cut growth, and it ended up as flat, bare soil. That blank slate makes it simple to choose a lawn, a border or hard surfacing next.

In the first photo the ground is covered in a tangle of cut and uncut weeds and trailing stems. A petrol strimmer lies across the middle, and a hose and a rake sit along the left edge. A rendered house with a small outbuilding stands at the back and an old stone wall with yellow flowers runs along the far side. A couple of timber lengths rest against the wall, and a small patch of gravel can be seen by the outbuilding door.
The second photo, taken from the same corner, shows the whole plot as dark, evenly raked soil with the weeds and cuttings gone. The stone wall is clearer and the gravel by the outbuilding is easier to see. Nothing is planted yet. Bare soil is a good point to stop and plan. If the plan is turf or seed, the surface can be levelled further and any lingering weeds dealt with first. If it is a patio or artificial grass, the soil would be dug out to make room for a proper base.
