Two photos show a tree being dismantled in a narrow walled lane in Cardiff. In the first, a climber in a helmet and harness works high up a long bare stem against a clear blue sky. In the second, the top has gone, only a short trunk is left and logs lie below.
The tree here is tall and slim, with branches only at the very top and houses, wires and brick walls close by. That makes dropping it whole too risky, so the climber works down in sections, lowering each piece rather than letting it fall. The first photo catches him partway up with a saw, the lower stem already stripped.
The second photo shows the aftermath: a stump of the stem still standing beside the wall, cut logs piled in the middle of the lane and the orange chipper working at the far end beside a vehicle. Branches are chipped on site, the timber is logged and green waste removed. Before any cutting we check for protection orders and nesting birds.
