This Cardiff project brings together hedge work from different gardens. It includes a long, neatly clipped hedge behind a stone patio, a front hedge cut back beside a road with clippings still on the ground and a tall evergreen being reduced from a ladder in a garden with a patio.

The first photo shows how a long hedge looks when it has been kept in hand. The top is flat, the face is even, and it forms a screen beside the patio without shading it. Getting a line like this takes patience, with a string line or a sighted eye along the top, and trimming in passes rather than one heavy cut. The front hedge is a different case: it sits close to the house, and the cut was done with a ladder and trimmers, with the cuttings left in a pile to load up.
In the last photo a ladder stands well up the side of a tall evergreen at the end of a paved garden. Cut leaves and twigs are already scattered over the slabs, and a petrol trimmer rests beside the base. A tree this high is reduced from the top down, taking off growth in stages, and nothing is cut where a clean branch collar is not available. Before work on any tree this tall we look at overhead wires, fences and anything that cannot be moved, and clear what we can out of the way first.
