Cardiff's leafy suburbs have plenty of long, shaded back gardens where bamboo was planted for privacy and has since taken over. We remove it by cutting the canes down and digging out the rhizomes and roots, then taking everything away, so the clump is dealt with rather than just trimmed.
Whether you live in a large Victorian house or a smaller semi, we will look at how far the bamboo has spread, tell you what we think is involved, and clear it with care for any trees and planting you want to keep.

Many Cardiff gardens are full of mature trees and big conifers, and bamboo is often tangled among them. That makes digging a more careful job, because we are working around roots we do not want to harm. We cut the canes first, which gives us a clear view of where the rhizomes run and how they lie against the existing roots. We go steadily and adjust our approach if we meet something important.
In conservation areas, trees can have extra protection, so it is worth checking before any tree work is planned. Bamboo itself is not a protected plant, and removing it is a garden job rather than a tree job. Still, if the bamboo is close to a tree you care about, tell us and we will dig accordingly. We are happy to talk through the options with you before any work begins.

Running bamboo does not respect boundaries, and in Cardiff's closely built streets a clump in one garden can show up in three. Rhizomes slip beneath fences, along paths and under patios. We trace them back to the main mass, remove what we can on your side, and explain where the rest likely sits, which can help when talking to a neighbour. So we arrive ready to work and do not find out on the day.
The waste is considerable, since bamboo canes and root balls are bulky. We take it all away. Access varies a great deal across the city, from open drives to narrow side passages, so a short description of how to reach the back garden helps us bring the right tools and plan the dig. A short description of the side access is plenty.
The ground will need a little finishing once the roots are out. Many Cardiff customers go for fresh turf, new borders or paving. We can leave the soil ready for whichever you choose, and look again later for any shoots that appear. We also cover Llandaff, Whitchurch, Rhiwbina, St Mellons, Pontprennau and Penylan. New growth is much easier to remove while it is small.

Running bamboo spreads through underground stems called rhizomes, and stopping it means digging them out thoroughly rather than just cutting down the canes.

Spreading bamboo can lift paving, push into wall joints and block drains, so it helps to know which type you have and when to act.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Yes, but we dig with care. We cut the canes first, then follow the rhizomes by hand where they lie close to tree roots. We aim to avoid damaging roots you want to keep, and we will tell you if anything looks like a problem.
Bamboo is a garden plant rather than a protected tree, so removing it is generally straightforward. Trees in conservation areas are a different matter and may need notice to the council. If you have any doubt about a tree near the bamboo, check with the council first.
The rhizome underneath has to be dug out, and that may mean lifting some paving to reach it. Cutting the visible canes will not stop it. We can look at how the patio is laid and explain how much needs to be lifted before we start.
