A neat screen of bamboo can turn into a problem within a few seasons, with shoots appearing in lawns, flower beds and gaps in the paving. We remove bamboo from gardens across Newport, cutting back the canes and digging out the underground rhizomes so the plant is dealt with at its source rather than just trimmed back again.
Newport gardens vary a lot, from small Victorian terrace yards to wide suburban plots on the larger estates, and the approach changes with the space. We also work in Caerleon, Bettws, Rogerstone, Maindee and Duffryn, and we carry away every cutting and root we dig up.

Running bamboo sends rhizomes out sideways, sometimes several metres, and a new cane can pop up well away from where you planted it. In a terrace yard that can mean shoots pushing through the base of a boundary wall or into the neighbour's plot. On a bigger estate garden it often takes over a whole border before anyone acts. Cutting it down alone rarely helps, because the buried stems simply send up fresh canes the following spring.
The thick rhizomes can also work into cracks in concrete, lift paving edges and wind around drain runs. That is why we like to look at what the bamboo is next to before we start, because pipes, patios and walls decide how carefully the digging has to be done and which parts need hand work. Where a wall is shared, we always mention it.

We begin by cutting the canes to the ground and clearing them away, which exposes the crown and the first runs of rhizome. From there we dig outwards, lifting each run and its fine roots until we reach the end of it. A small digger helps on open lawn, while tight spots are done with spades and forks. In Newport back gardens that are fully enclosed, we plan where to stack the cut canes first.
Even a short length of rhizome left behind can sprout again, so we sift the soil as we work and pull out loose fragments. All the green waste goes with us. If you would like us to return later in the season to look for any shoots that have appeared, we are happy to arrange that. You will know exactly what we found.
The size of the patch, the access and how close it sits to buildings all shape the work, so we prefer to see it, or at least a few photos. For a Newport terrace with a back lane or a narrow side return, we will talk through how waste leaves the garden. We then agree the plan with you before any digging starts.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Newport.

Running bamboo spreads through underground stems called rhizomes, and stopping it means digging them out thoroughly rather than just cutting down the canes.

Spreading bamboo can lift paving, push into wall joints and block drains, so it helps to know which type you have and when to act.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Running bamboo throws up canes at random distances from the main clump, often in a lawn or past the edge of the border. Clumping bamboo grows as a tight, widening mound. If you are not sure, send us a photo or let us look when we visit.
Rhizomes can grow into and around pipework, especially older clay drains with weak joints. It does not happen everywhere, but if bamboo is close to a drain run we take extra care when digging and will tell you if we see anything that needs a specialist.
Yes. The cut canes, rhizomes and soil debris are all loaded up and removed from the property, so you do not have to find a way of disposing of it. We leave the ground raked over and the area clear.
