This Newport project has two parts. A rounded evergreen tree sits in a small garden between a conservatory and a timber fence, and a back outbuilding with a corrugated roof is covered in ivy that has climbed up towards the house. We worked on both with a ladder and hand tools.

The tree in the first photo has a tidy, domed crown with a single clear trunk, rising above the fence line and over the conservatory. It is the kind of shape that stays in proportion only if the outer growth is trimmed back regularly, so that the canopy stays off the glass and gutter. Working over a conservatory means keeping cuttings off the glass, which is why we cut small pieces and lower them rather than letting them fall.
The other two photos show ivy blanketing an old outbuilding roof, with a person up among the growth and a ladder against the house wall behind. Ivy this thick hides the condition of the roof and pushes into gaps, so we cut it back and pull it off in sections, and check what has been hidden underneath. Ivy roots can stay stuck to masonry and take time to come away, so we do not force them off.
