Gardens on the hillsides around Caerphilly give bamboo a lot to work with, from sheltered terraces to bigger plots on the wooded slopes. If a clump has got out of hand, we cut the canes down, dig out the rhizomes and roots, and take the waste away so you can start again with a clear piece of ground.
We deal with bamboo that has run under paths, through hedges and across lawns, and with thick screens that have simply grown too big. A quick look at the garden lets us explain what we would remove and how we would go about it.

Bamboo likes moisture and shelter, and plenty of Caerphilly gardens offer both. A wooded slope behind the house, a damp corner at the bottom of a garden or a sheltered terrace all suit running types, whose rhizomes spread sideways just under the surface and send up canes wherever they find a gap. Left alone, one small planting becomes a dense thicket. Without attention it shades out everything growing nearby.
On a sloping plot the spread can be hard to follow, because rhizomes travel with the lie of the land and can turn up above or below the original clump. We trace them as far as they go rather than assuming the visible canes tell the full story, since the real extent is almost always underground. It is often a good deal bigger below ground than it looks from the lawn.

First we cut the canes to the ground and clear them so the whole area is visible. Then we dig out the rhizome mat and the roots in sections, taking particular care on steeper ground so loose soil does not slide. Anything planted nearby that you want to keep is protected as far as the digging allows. We tell you beforehand if any of it is likely to be disturbed.
On Caerphilly's newer estates the gardens are often open-plan with low fences, so we pay attention to where the roots might have crossed a boundary. All the canes, roots and spoil that cannot stay are taken away, and we are glad to return for a regrowth check if you would like one. A quick check some months on can save a repeat job.
Once the bamboo is gone, you have a blank patch that needs a plan, and it helps to think about it before we start. Turf, borders, a lower-maintenance surface or a tidy fence line all work. Tell us what you have in mind for your Caerphilly garden. We also cover Bedwas, Machen, Senghenydd, Llanbradach and Nelson. We leave the ground suitably prepared for it.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Caerphilly.

Running bamboo spreads through underground stems called rhizomes, and stopping it means digging them out thoroughly rather than just cutting down the canes.

Spreading bamboo can lift paving, push into wall joints and block drains, so it helps to know which type you have and when to act.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Yes, though steep ground means more care. We dig in sections so soil is not left loose, and we plan how to get tools and waste up and down the slope. A look at the access beforehand helps us decide the sensible way to approach it.
They can. Bamboo regrows from small pieces of rhizome, which is why we dig thoroughly and trace the roots as far as they run. We cannot promise nothing will ever appear, but we can come back and check, and early shoots are easy to remove.
Usually yes, and it is easier then. A young clump has a smaller root mass and has not had much time to run. Removing it early saves a good deal of digging later and keeps it from reaching walls, drains or your neighbour's garden.
