With the castle in the middle and Caerphilly Mountain behind, this is a town built on slopes, and many gardens climb or fall away from the house. A patio gives that ground a flat, usable heart. We build new patios and paved areas on terraced streets, newer estates and the larger hillside plots alike.
Whatever the size, we measure the levels first and plan the work to match. We also cover Bedwas, Machen, Senghenydd, Llanbradach and Nelson. Tell us about your garden and the slope you have to deal with, and we will take it from there.

Gardens on the hillside often need a decision before any paving is ordered: do we cut back into the slope, build up to a level, or do a little of both? In Caerphilly we measure from the house outward, work out how much ground has to move and plan any retaining edge or step so the finished area feels natural. That planning stage is where most of the success of the patio is decided.
Wooded slopes bring shade, falling leaves and roots, all of which affect a patio. We check what is growing close by, keep the base clear of larger roots where possible, and suggest a surface that is easy to sweep. A little shade can also be pleasant in summer, so we plan seating with that in mind. Our approach is to work with the trees rather than against them.

Terraced houses in Caerphilly usually have a narrow back yard, where a compact patio with a neat path can transform the space. Newer estates and larger gardens give room for a bigger entertaining area, perhaps with a border or raised bed alongside. We shape the design to suit the way you live rather than offering one standard layout. We also think about how the patio links to the house, so you are not stepping down awkwardly from the back door.
Whatever the design, the build is the same careful process: mark out, excavate, lay and compact a sub-base, bed the slabs and fall them gently for drainage. We point the joints, tidy the edges against walls and steps, and clear away spoil and offcuts so you can start using the patio straight away. If there is an existing path or border you want to keep, we simply work around it.
Rain runs off Caerphilly Mountain and down through gardens, so drainage is not an afterthought. We lay patios with a fall away from the house and think about where the water will go. A regular sweep and an occasional wash keeps most surfaces looking good, and we are glad to advise on what suits the paving you choose.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Caerphilly.
Patio ConstructionWe cleared the old paving at the back of a Bridgend house, compacted the base and stacked new slabs ready for laying.

Patio ConstructionWe laid new grey paving slabs in a narrow Cardiff garden, with timber-edged gravel beds and a membrane-lined side strip.

Patio ConstructionWe replaced the front lawn of a red-brick terraced house in Neath with dark grey paving and a pale border of edging stones.

Porcelain offers a consistent, low-maintenance surface, while natural stone brings variation and character, and both depend on a properly built base.

The cost of a patio depends on its size, the paving you choose, the ground beneath it and how easily materials and waste can be moved.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Often we can, usually by creating a level platform with a retaining edge or steps. We look at the slope on site, explain what would be involved and make sure water drains safely away from the house before we agree the plan with you.
A retaining edge is a low wall or kerb that holds back soil where the ground is cut into or built up. On a hillside garden you may need one so the patio stays stable. We will tell you if your layout calls for it.
Shaded paving can grow algae and collect leaves, but it is manageable. A good fall for drainage helps the surface dry, and regular sweeping keeps it clear. We can suggest textured slabs that grip better when damp, and plan where to sit.
