Streets in Ebbw Vale climb the valley sides in long terraces, and the gardens above them can be exposed, steep and windy. A patio gives you one flat, sheltered spot among all that slope. We build new patios and paved areas for homes across the town, using sturdy materials and careful groundwork to cope with the conditions.
Each job starts with measuring the levels and ends with a tidy, well-drained surface. We also cover Beaufort, Cwm, Brynmawr and Tredegar, so if you live close by, tell us what you want from the space and we will plan the patio around the shape of your plot.

Hilltop and hillside gardens rarely give you a flat patch for free. In Ebbw Vale we measure how the ground falls from the house, then decide whether to cut into the slope, build up a platform or step the paving in stages. Where soil has to be held back, we plan a retaining edge so the finished patio stays stable and the bank behind it does not slump onto the slabs.
Steps are usually part of the picture on these plots, linking the patio to the upper lawn, the path or the gate. We build them as a proper part of the design, with consistent heights and firm edges, so they are safe in wet and frosty weather and look as though they belong with the paving. Handrails or low walls can be added where a drop needs protecting.

Gardens high on the valley side take the full force of wind and weather. A patio here needs a base that will not move, so we dig down to firm ground, build a sub-base in compacted layers and bed the slabs on mortar. Laid to a slight fall, with water able to run clear, the paving in Ebbw Vale has far less to fear from heavy rain or from frost lifting it.
Shelter makes a big difference to how much you use the space. A fence, a low wall or a planted screen on the windward side can turn a blustery corner into somewhere comfortable to sit, and we can talk through the options while we plan the patio. Surfaces with good grip are a sensible choice on sloping, wet ground, where a smooth slab can turn slippery.
Terraced streets mean narrow access, and sometimes materials have to be carried through the house or along a back path. We plan for that in advance, protect what we can along the way and take all spoil and waste away at the end. Tell us about the access at your Ebbw Vale property and we will explain how we would approach the work.

Porcelain offers a consistent, low-maintenance surface, while natural stone brings variation and character, and both depend on a properly built base.

The cost of a patio depends on its size, the paving you choose, the ground beneath it and how easily materials and waste can be moved.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Yes, with the right preparation. We measure the slope, create a level platform and build a solid, compacted base so the paving stays put in wind, rain and frost. We can also talk through shelter, such as a fence or screen.
We plan for it ahead of time. Slabs and base material are usually carried through the house or along a back path in manageable loads, with floors and doorframes protected. Tell us how the garden is reached and we will agree the route before any work begins.
Frost damage generally comes from water getting into a weak base. We build a compacted sub-base, bed the slabs on mortar and lay to a fall so water drains away. That is what helps the paving stay flat through cold winters.
