This Neath project changed the front garden of a red-brick Victorian-style terrace from lawn to a paved area. The first photo shows a small tracked digger lifting the turf. The second shows the finished result: large dark slabs with a light border, framed by the existing hedge, shrubs and a low brick wall.

The first photo shows the start of the job. A compact tracked digger is working near the front door, and the first patches of dark soil are showing where the turf has been lifted. The rest of the lawn is still green. The hedge, flowering shrubs and the gate were left untouched, which matters in a small front garden where access is tight and the plants need protecting from the machine.
In the second photo the lawn has gone. The area is covered in large, dark slate-grey slabs with a glossy, wet-looking surface, set out in a neat grid. A border of lighter grey stones runs around the edge, and a strip of dark gravel sits between the paving and the brick wall on the right. The hedge along the front remains. Dark paving like this shows water and dirt differently from light stone, so it is worth asking how it should be cleaned.
