This South Wales patio is finished and shows the kind of paving we lay for house-side seating areas. The slabs are a mix of warm browns, greys and soft pinks in different sizes, laid in a random pattern with pale pointing, between a white rendered wall and a tall timber fence.

The slabs have the varied, natural-stone look of sandstone, with a range of colours across the surface rather than one flat tone. They are laid in a mixed-size pattern, and the joints are pointed in a pale mortar. A strip of loose gravel runs along the base of the house wall, and more gravel follows the fence line. On the right the paving continues as a path across what looks like bare ground. A sign for a landscaping firm leans against the wall.
Natural-look paving hides small marks well because the colour already varies, which suits a patio that will be used and walked on every day. The gravel strip beside the wall keeps splashback away from the render and helps with drainage. When planning a patio, think about where water will run, how the paving meets the wall, and whether you want the same slabs carried on to paths.
