This Bridgend job started with a small, tired patio of worn paving slabs behind a pebble-dashed house, with lawn running up to it. The first photo shows how it looked before we began. The second shows the old paving gone, the ground levelled and being compacted, and the new slabs stacked on the lawn ready to go down.

In the first photo the old slabs are stained and uneven, with weeds in the joints and a worn lawn at the edge. In the second, the paving has been lifted and the area stripped back to bare soil. One of us is walking a petrol plate compactor over the ground beside the back doors. The new slabs are stacked in several piles on the grass, with tubs and a metal tray nearby. This is work in progress, not the finished patio.
A patio is only as good as what is under it. Old paving is lifted, the soil dug to depth, and a stone sub-base laid and compacted in layers so it will not settle. The slabs then go on a mortar bed with a slight fall away from the house so rainwater drains off. Where a patio meets door thresholds, a damp course or a drain, the levels need checking before anything is laid. Rushing this stage shows later as rocking slabs and standing water.
