Ebbw Vale climbs the valley sides, with terraced streets stacked up the slope and gardens at the top that catch every gust. The steelworks past is still part of the town's character, but today the trees in the gardens matter more. We prune and reduce them, thin dense growth and remove dead wood, so they can handle the wind and sit well with the house.
Many of our jobs here begin with one question: how do we keep this tree in a smaller, tidier shape without making it weaker? We look at the tree's shape, its position on the slope and what is underneath it, and then explain the cuts we would make.

Gardens high on the valley sides are exposed, and trees there take more wind than those lower down. A crown that is dense and heavy on one side catches the gusts like a sail. Pruning to thin the canopy and shorten the longest limbs lets the wind pass through more freely and reduces the strain on branches and roots, which is useful anywhere the weather comes straight over the ridge.
That does not make a tree immune to storms, and we would never claim it does. What it does is remove the weakest wood, balance the crown and cut back the limbs that are most likely to snap, so the tree loses nothing it needs. In Ebbw Vale, where winter weather can be rough, a well-pruned tree is simply in better shape to cope.

Lower down, the terraced streets have narrow back gardens, often stepped up the slope. A single tree can dominate such a garden, throwing shade across the yard and reaching over neighbouring walls. Careful reduction brings it back into scale. We lower branches in controlled sections, because there is often little room, and we protect walls, steps and fences as we go, since a mistake in a small garden is costly.
Fruit trees and ornamentals do well from a light, regular prune, ideally in winter, so the cuts heal and the structure is easy to see. Conifers need a more cautious approach, because they will not regrow from old bare wood. We reduce them only within the green growth, and if an Ebbw Vale conifer has grown far too tall and bare, we will say so and talk through the alternatives, including replacing it with something that suits the space.
Steps, narrow paths and steep gardens are the norm in Ebbw Vale, so please tell us how the tree is reached when you contact us. We also keep an eye on the weather, because wet or windy days are not the time for pruning. We avoid the nesting season and take the cuttings away. We also cover Beaufort, Cwm, Brynmawr and Tredegar.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.

Tall conifers can often be reduced safely, but only back to living green growth, because most will never regrow from bare brown wood.

Regular pruning keeps trees safe, balanced and healthy, brings light back into gardens and buildings, and usually avoids the larger and more disruptive jobs that neglect leads to.
Read the guide →It can help. Thinning the crown and shortening heavy limbs reduces how much wind the tree catches and removes weak or dead wood. No pruning can make a tree storm-proof, but a balanced tree has a better chance.
Yes. We plan the job around the space available, lower branches in sections and protect walls and fences. Tell us about the access and what sits beneath the tree so we can prepare properly and bring the right equipment for the day.
We will not work in conditions that make the job unsafe, such as strong wind or heavy rain on a steep garden. If the weather turns, we will agree a new day with you rather than push on and risk damage.
Tell us what needs doing and where. We will come back to you, or call 07766 919630 if it is urgent.
