Cowbridge is a historic Vale of Glamorgan market town, with a long main street and big village-edge gardens that fall away into farmland. Mature boundary trees are part of the picture here. We prune and reduce garden trees, thin congested growth and remove dead wood, so they keep a good shape, let light through and stay in proportion with the property.
Most of the work we do here is the steady kind: taking a tree that has got a little out of hand and bringing it back under control, with clean cuts and no drama. We explain the plan first, then do the work and clear up.

Where a Cowbridge garden meets a field, the boundary trees often go unpruned for a long time. Branches stretch over fences and drives, and the crown grows heavy on the side with the most light. We shorten those limbs back to suitable side branches and remove deadwood, so the tree is lighter, safer to stand under and still looks natural in the landscape.
Larger gardens also tend to have older ornamental trees that have outgrown their original place. A careful reduction can make them fit again without spoiling their shape. We do not top trees, because topping leaves ugly stubs, invites rot and prompts a thicket of weak shoots. Instead we make a handful of well-placed cuts and let the tree carry on growing the way it should in a Cowbridge garden.

Not every tree should be pruned at the same time. Many do well with winter work, while some flowering and fruiting trees have a better moment after blossom. We check what you have before suggesting dates, and we avoid the spring nesting season, which is busy in the hedges and old trees around the Vale, and we would rather wait than disturb a nest. A good prune is carefully timed as well as carefully cut.
Conifers are the one group where we are deliberately cautious. Fir and similar trees will not regrow from old bare wood, so we reduce them only within the green growth and never cut back to the brown. If a screening conifer in Cowbridge has grown beyond reshaping, we will say so rather than pretend a trim will fix it, and then we can talk about a sensible replacement.
Long drives, gates and soft lawns are common in Cowbridge gardens, so tell us about the access and anything that might be in the way. We cut branches down in sections, protect borders and lawns as far as we can, and take the cuttings away when we finish. We also cover Llanblethian, Llantwit Major, Llandough and St Hilary.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Cowbridge.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.

Tall conifers can often be reduced safely, but only back to living green growth, because most will never regrow from bare brown wood.

Regular pruning keeps trees safe, balanced and healthy, brings light back into gardens and buildings, and usually avoids the larger and more disruptive jobs that neglect leads to.
Read the guide →Yes. We shorten overhanging branches, remove deadwood and reduce the crown where needed, lowering the wood in sections. If the tree is on land belonging to someone else, we will need the owner's agreement before we start, and we will talk you through the plan.
Almost never. Topping removes the main crown and leaves ugly stubs that rot and sprout weak, fast growth. A proper crown reduction shortens branches back to side shoots and keeps the natural outline, which is healthier for the tree.
Often yes. Some flowering trees are better pruned shortly after they bloom, while many apple and pear trees do well with winter work. Tell us what you have and we will pick the right moment for that species.
