Chepstow stands on the Wye below its castle, at the edge of the Wye Valley National Landscape with the Forest of Dean on the opposite bank. Ground here is steep and wooded, houses are often period buildings, and trees have had plenty of time to mature. We prune garden trees to shape, thin heavy growth and take out dead wood, so they remain healthy and do not overwhelm the house or garden.
Many of our Chepstow jobs involve awkward ground, so planning matters as much as cutting. We look at the slope, the access and what lies below the tree, then explain how we would tackle it before any work begins.

A tree on a bank above a house needs careful handling. Branches have to be lowered in controlled sections, because anything dropped will roll or slide. We plan each cut and where the wood will end up before we start. On wooded Chepstow slopes this matters even more, because the roots are already holding the soil and the crown should not be thrown off balance.
Mature trees by period houses can press on walls, chimneys and slate roofs. Pruning lifts or shortens those limbs so the tree sits comfortably alongside the building. We also remove dead and crossing branches while we are up there, and we never cut more than the tree can cope with, since a heavy hit leads to weak, bushy regrowth that needs cutting again before long.

Crown reduction should leave a tree looking like a smaller version of itself. We cut back to side branches at sensible points so the outline stays natural, rather than trimming everything to the same length. This takes more care than topping, but the tree heals better, holds its natural shape and looks more attractive for years afterwards, which suits the older houses and gardens around Chepstow.
Fruit trees, ornamentals and conifers each want something different. Fruit trees like open centres, ornamentals a light touch, and conifers caution, since they will not regrow from old bare wood. We reduce conifers only within the green growth. Where a Chepstow garden has a conifer that has grown too far, we will say so and discuss what to do, whether that is a lighter trim or a replacement tree.
Chepstow has conservation areas and some protected trees, so pruning can need permission from the council, and it is worth checking before you book anyone. If you suspect yours is covered, check first and let us know. We steer clear of the nesting season where possible, and we take away all cuttings. We also cover Tutshill, Mathern, Caerwent and Shirenewton.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.

Tall conifers can often be reduced safely, but only back to living green growth, because most will never regrow from bare brown wood.

Regular pruning keeps trees safe, balanced and healthy, brings light back into gardens and buildings, and usually avoids the larger and more disruptive jobs that neglect leads to.
Read the guide →It might be. Trees in conservation areas, and those with a preservation order, normally need council consent before pruning. A quick call or online check with the council will tell you. If yours is protected, we can carry out the work that has been agreed.
Yes, though it takes more planning. We lower branches in sections, use ropes or other methods where needed and keep the work controlled so nothing rolls onto the property below. Tell us about the slope and access when you contact us.
We generally avoid removing a large share of the crown in a single visit, since that stresses the tree and encourages poor regrowth. For a big tree we will often plan a lighter reduction now and a follow-up later.
