Swansea gardens take a lot of weather. Wind comes in off the bay, sea air burns tender growth, and hillside suburbs mean trees are often exposed on one side. Pruning helps a tree cope. We thin the crown so wind passes through more easily, take out damaged and dead branches, and keep trees in proportion with the plot they stand in.
Each tree is different, so we look first at how it has grown and where it takes the worst of the weather. Swansea trees on exposed ground need a different plan from those tucked behind a house or a wall.

A dense, heavy crown acts like a sail in a gale. By thinning branches evenly we let air filter through and cut the leverage on the trunk and main limbs. In Swansea we often find trees bent over by prevailing winds, with long branches on one side. Easing those back and balancing the crown helps the tree carry itself better when the next storm arrives.
Salt-laden air also takes a toll, scorching leaves and leaving dead twigs behind. We clear that dieback so decay does not creep in, and we cut back to healthy growth each time, not into bare wood. We do not remove huge amounts at once, as a sudden loss of foliage on an exposed site can stress a tree further and leave it weaker than before.

From Sketty up toward the hills, and in gardens close to Singleton Park, trees are often larger and have been growing for generations. Mature ornamentals and old fruit trees need patient work. We take out deadwood, reduce branches that hang over paths, windows or roofs, and keep the outline natural, so the tree still looks like it belongs there, and the work does not stand out as obvious cutting.
Where gardens rise on steep slopes, we plan how branches will come down and how they are carried to the road. Conifers are reduced only within their green growth, because they will not regrow from bare brown wood. If a tree has gone beyond sensible pruning, we will say so plainly rather than make a poor cut that only causes more trouble later on. Swansea gardens have plenty of fine trees, and many simply need a lighter touch.
Winter suits many species, and we stay clear of the nesting season so birds are not disturbed. A tree with a protection order, or one in a conservation area, needs checking first, and we will raise it with you. Beyond Swansea we also work in Sketty, Mumbles, Morriston, Clydach and Gowerton. All cuttings are cleared away at the end of each visit.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.

Tall conifers can often be reduced safely, but only back to living green growth, because most will never regrow from bare brown wood.

Regular pruning keeps trees safe, balanced and healthy, brings light back into gardens and buildings, and usually avoids the larger and more disruptive jobs that neglect leads to.
Read the guide →It can help by reducing weight on the windward side and thinning the crown so the wind passes through. It will not straighten a tree, and if the lean looks recent or the roots are lifting, we will advise caution and may suggest a closer look before any pruning goes ahead.
Salt-laden wind often scorches leaves and young shoots. We can cut out the dead tips back to healthy wood, but we cannot say what caused the damage without seeing the tree, as pests, disease and drought look similar.
Yes, we cover the Mumbles and nearby villages around Swansea Bay and the Gower. We will talk through the tree with you first. Coastal and sloping gardens can be exposed and awkward to reach, so we plan how to bring branches down safely and clear them away.
