Bridgend grew up around the River Ogmore, and the town today is a patchwork of older streets and newer estates with the Vale on one side and the valley edges on the other. That mix means every garden tree has a slightly different story. We prune garden trees back to a sensible shape, thin overcrowded branches and clear deadwood so they suit the plot they stand in.
People usually call us once a tree has begun to lean over a fence, shade a patio or scrape a roof. Often a careful prune is all that is needed, and we will tell you if it is not.

On the older Bridgend streets, trees tend to be bigger than the gardens were designed for, and branches reach across boundaries and over roofs. On the newer estates the problem is different: trees planted close to the house a few seasons ago have now filled their space. In both cases, a measured reduction restores the balance without hurting the tree, and it keeps overhanging branches off neighbours and roofs.
We start by deciding what the tree is meant to do in the garden, whether that is giving shade, screening a view or simply looking good. Then we plan cuts that support it. That might mean lifting a low branch, trimming one heavy side or thinning the middle so light passes through. We talk it through with you before any work starts.

Good pruning is as much about timing as technique. Many trees suit pruning in winter, when the leaves are down and the structure is clear, while others tolerate or prefer a different season, so we check the species first. Fruit trees need open, airy crowns, and ornamentals usually want a light hand. We choose the work to suit each species, not a one-size routine, and we explain our reasoning as we go.
Conifers are the exception where caution matters most. They will not regrow from old bare wood, so we never cut them back to brown growth. If a fir in a Bridgend garden has become a tall screen that blocks the sun, we will reduce it within the green and say honestly when it is simply too far gone to be reshaped, so you are not left with work that never looks right.
Most Bridgend jobs involve ordinary garden access, but if your tree is at the back of a long terrace or behind a gate, let us know when you contact us. We keep clear of the nesting season where possible, take the cuttings away and leave the lawn and borders as we found them. We also work in Pencoed, Porthcawl, Ogmore-by-Sea, Brackla and Coity.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.

Tall conifers can often be reduced safely, but only back to living green growth, because most will never regrow from bare brown wood.

Regular pruning keeps trees safe, balanced and healthy, brings light back into gardens and buildings, and usually avoids the larger and more disruptive jobs that neglect leads to.
Read the guide →If the tree is basically healthy but too big, overhanging or crowded, pruning usually solves it. If it is dead, badly decayed or leaning dangerously, removal may be the safer answer. We look at the whole tree and give you a straight opinion either way.
Yes. Crown thinning removes selected branches throughout the canopy so more light and air pass through while the overall shape is kept. We do not strip the tree out, because taking too much weakens it and encourages untidy regrowth.
We cut them down in sections, take them away and sweep up the garden before we leave. If you would rather keep logs for a stove or fire, tell us beforehand and we will leave suitable pieces stacked where you want them.
