Bridgend is a commuter town with older streets near the Ogmore and plenty of newer estates around the edges, and the trees in its gardens vary just as much. Some were planted with the houses and have grown right over the drive. Crown lifting takes off the lowest branches so that people and vehicles can get underneath without ducking or scraping.
We keep each lift sensible, with the whole tree in mind, so it stays healthy, balanced and natural looking once the clear space is back. Nothing is cut that does not need to be, and nothing is left half done or lying on the drive.

On a newer estate the garden tree was often chosen small and neat. Years later the branches droop over the pavement, brush the car and shade the front room. These trees usually respond well to a lift, because the fix is simple. We remove the lowest limbs and shape the lift so that the crown still looks even from the road and does not appear to have been pruned on one side only.
Pavements matter in Bridgend, especially on the busier streets. Low branches over a footway can catch pushchairs, mobility scooters and anyone carrying shopping, and they hide road signs and street lamps. Clearing a sensible height above the path is a courtesy to neighbours as well as an improvement for you, and we make every cut cleanly at the collar so the tree can seal each wound.

Closer to the centre of Bridgend the older gardens hold taller, more mature trees. Their lowest branches can be thick, and removing them calls for patience. We cut in stages, taking the weight off before the final cut so the bark does not tear down the trunk. A neat finish matters on a thick limb, because a large ragged wound takes much longer to close.
Towards the valley edges and the Vale, trees stand more open to the wind and rain. We take care not to strip the lower crown so far that the balance changes. A light lift now can often be repeated in a few years, and that is usually kinder to a tree than one heavy removal that cannot be put right afterwards, and which can leave the tree looking strange for years.
Before any cut we look for protection orders and conservation area status, as a Bridgend tree may need consent even for a lift. We avoid the nesting season, too. We also cover Pencoed, Porthcawl, Ogmore-by-Sea, Brackla and Coity, and when the job is done we clear every branch and sweep up so the drive or path is ready for use.

Crown lifting raises the canopy by removing low branches, while crown reduction makes the whole tree smaller, so choosing the right one depends on your problem.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.
Read the guide →A footway should be clear enough for people to walk under comfortably, and a road or driveway needs more for vehicles. We aim for what the route requires, and tell you if the tree can only safely give less than that.
A modest lift should not. The upper crown stays as it was, with its shape intact, and the tree simply looks more open underneath. Problems arise when too much is taken, which is why we keep it measured and natural.
No, crown lifting only deals with the lower branches and leaves the trunk and roots alone. If you want a tree removed completely, that is a different job, and we can talk through whether it is the right choice for your garden in Bridgend.
