A tidy screen of bamboo can turn into a headache within a few seasons. In Bridgend we cut the canes back, dig out the rhizomes and roots, and take the waste away, so you get your garden back rather than watching the clump creep on into the lawn, the borders and the patio.
We look at the clump and the ground around it first, because a few canes by a shed and a thicket that has crossed a whole garden call for different amounts of digging. Then we clear it properly.

Not all bamboo behaves the same way. Running types spread by rhizomes that travel underground and throw up canes some distance from the parent plant, while clumping types widen slowly from the centre. It is the running kind that most often leads to a call, because in a Bridgend garden it ends up under paving, through borders and beneath fences, sometimes surfacing several metres from where it was planted.
Telling the two apart is useful, but either way the job is about the root system rather than the canes. Cutting stems to the ground leaves everything underneath untouched, and fresh shoots appear soon afterwards. Proper removal means digging out the rhizomes and roots, following each one until it ends, and that is the part that takes the time. A young clump is simple to lift, while an old one needs patient work with a spade and fork.

Older Bridgend gardens may hold a clump that has been in place for many years, with a deep mat of rhizome and root to lift. Gardens on newer estates are usually smaller, with fences close by and less room to work, so we dig by hand or with small tools and take care around posts, drains and paving edges, because rhizomes often follow the line of a wall or a path.
Once the ground is dug, the canes, roots and spoil leave with us. Bamboo does not rot away quickly, so leaving it in a corner is rarely wise. The cleared area is then ready for turf, seed, beds or paving. We can look for regrowth later, since small fragments left in the soil can send up new shoots, and those are much easier to remove while they are young.
Bamboo often arrives from next door. We can clear what is on your side and dig back to the fence line, but if the source remains it may keep sending rhizomes your way, so a calm word with the neighbour is usually a sensible start. For bamboo removal in Bridgend we also cover Pencoed, Porthcawl, Brackla and Coity, so tell us where you are.

Running bamboo spreads through underground stems called rhizomes, and stopping it means digging them out thoroughly rather than just cutting down the canes.

Spreading bamboo can lift paving, push into wall joints and block drains, so it helps to know which type you have and when to act.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →We can dig out what is on your side and follow the rhizomes as far as the boundary. If the main clump is next door, the problem may return unless that is dealt with too. We will tell you what we find when we are there.
If canes are popping up in a line away from the main clump, or in the lawn or under paving, it is probably running. Clumping bamboo stays in a tight, slowly widening circle. Either way, let us see it and we will advise.
It will disturb the ground where the roots are, so expect bare soil. We leave the area cleared of waste and ready for reseeding or turf. If the rhizomes have gone under the lawn, we may need to lift a larger section, and we will explain that first.
