This Bridgend job shows the opening stage of an artificial grass lawn. The back garden is a narrow terraced plot with a lattice fence, a stone-chipping path and a patio door close by. Along one edge the old lawn has been cut back to bare soil, which is where every artificial grass job begins.

The photo was taken part-way through, so it is groundwork rather than a finished lawn. A wheelbarrow and a spade are out, and a strip of dark soil has been opened up beside the path where the old turf was lifted. The rest of the real grass is still in place, so you can see the starting point clearly. A path of pale stone chippings runs down the middle of the garden and gives a straight line to work to. Raised beds sit on the right and a small seating area stands near the house.
Artificial grass sits on a prepared base, not straight on soil. The old turf is stripped out, the ground is dug to a set depth, and a compacted layer of stone is laid and levelled so water can drain through. A weed membrane goes over the top before the turf is cut, laid and fixed. In a terraced garden like this one, access matters. Everything has to come through the house or a shared passage, so we plan barrow runs and where the removed turf will be stacked before the digging starts.
Artificial GrassCompacted, levelled stone sub-base laid in a small enclosed Pontyclun courtyard, ready for artificial grass to be fitted on top.
