Here is a completed artificial grass lawn at the front of a semi-detached house in Swansea. The plot is small, which is exactly where artificial turf earns its place: it gives a clean green frontage with no mowing. It runs right up to the railings, the driveway and a tall, clipped hedge.

The turf is laid in one continuous piece with straight edges against the low wall, the railings and the paved drive. Two tall conifers, clipped into neat cone shapes, stand in front of the porch and a pot of red flowers sits between them. A tall hedge runs down the right-hand side. A bin and a parked car show that the front garden is used day to day, so a hard-wearing surface suits it.
Front gardens are seen every day, so clean edges matter more than anything. Where turf meets a wall or a kerb it should be cut tight and fixed down so no gaps show. Next to a hedge, it is worth leaving room for the hedge to be trimmed without clippings getting trapped in the fibres. Plants beside the lawn still need their usual care, and fallen leaves will need brushing or blowing off from time to time. The turf itself stays green without feeding or watering.
