This Swansea job was about getting ivy off a tall timber fence and the brick wall of a house beside it. The photo shows the work underway: a long ladder is resting against the side wall, cut growth is lying on the ground below, and only thin remaining strands of ivy still cling to the fence boards.

The fence is close-boarded timber, weathered and green in places, and the ivy has been cut away from most of its face. A few thin stems are still threaded between the boards. Beside it, a red brick house wall meets a lower brick wall topped with a pale coping, and a downpipe runs down the corner. A ladder leans into the gap, which is narrow and awkward to reach, and the clippings are piled on the ground below it.
Ivy is cut at the base first so the growth above can die back, then pulled away in manageable pieces rather than yanked off in one go. On fences it can be worked out from between the boards. On brick, the sticky roots can stay behind for a while and are brushed or picked off carefully, because tearing at them risks pulling out loose pointing. Ivy can also hide gaps in guttering and brickwork, and birds may nest in it, so we look before we cut.
