This Cardiff job is ivy on the stone gable of a cottage. A long ladder runs up the wall between two windows, and a pile of cut ivy sits against the right-hand corner. Some ivy still hangs on the wall and around the gutter.

On old stonework, ivy is cut at the base first and the top growth is allowed to loosen as it dies back. Pulling live ivy off a wall can bring pointing and stone with it, so we work gently. The photo shows stems and some leaves still on the wall, which is normal part-way through a job like this, so treat it as work in progress.
Ivy near a roof edge, satellite dish or gutter needs particular care. It can push into gaps and hide damage, so once it is cleared you can see the true state of the wall. We also check for nesting birds, as ivy is a favourite place for them, and we leave any active nest alone.
