Bamboo is easy to plant and very hard to stop. In Swansea we cut down spreading bamboo and dig out the rhizomes beneath it, leaving you with a clear patch of ground rather than a regrowing thicket that keeps pushing canes up through the lawn, the borders and the gaps in your paving.
We work across the city and nearby areas such as Sketty, Mumbles, Morriston, Clydach and Gowerton. Whether your garden is a tidy suburban lawn or a sloping plot looking out over the bay, we plan the job around the space available.

Bamboo in Swansea gardens is often planted as a quick screen, perhaps against the wind off the bay or against a neighbour's windows, and it does the job well for a while. A running type can then spend several seasons spreading underground, and by the time the first cane appears in the flower bed or beside the garden fence, the root mat is already large and tangled.
Rhizomes can run a long way, so what you see above ground is only part of the story. Gardens in the hillside suburbs often have retaining walls and steps, and bamboo happily grows into the soil behind them. Finding where the roots stop is the real task, and it takes patient digging rather than a quick pull. We tell you what we find as we go.

We start by cutting the canes down and clearing them, which exposes the crown. We then dig it out and follow the rhizomes, pulling each one free and tracing its run until it ends. In a Swansea garden with open access we can work across the whole bed, while in small back gardens and terraces the digging is done with spades and forks, a little at a time.
The soil is worked through as we go, because tiny fragments can root again. Once the main clearance is done, the canes, roots and spoil all go with us. We are glad to come back later in the season to look for stray shoots, which are far easier to remove when they are young, so the follow-up stays simple. Any canes that do return usually come from a small fragment left in the soil, and they can be dug out then.
Once the bamboo is out, the ground is loose and full of gaps, so you can decide what goes there next, whether that is lawn, a border or a patio. If you are thinking of replanting in Swansea, tell us, because we can leave the soil in a suitable state. We would suggest holding off on planting until the area has been checked for regrowth.

Running bamboo spreads through underground stems called rhizomes, and stopping it means digging them out thoroughly rather than just cutting down the canes.

Spreading bamboo can lift paving, push into wall joints and block drains, so it helps to know which type you have and when to act.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Running bamboo is a problem anywhere it has been planted without a barrier. It spreads far beyond its original spot, so we are often asked to remove it from lawns and borders. A clumping type is usually less trouble, and we will tell you which you have.
Yes. If everything has to go through the house or a narrow passage, we carry tools in and the waste out by hand. Tell us about the route when you get in touch and we will plan the job around it.
We would wait until we have checked for regrowth, typically after the next growing spell. Leaving the ground bare, or covered with a simple temporary layer, makes stray shoots easy to spot and remove before anything new goes in.
Tell us what needs doing and where. We will come back to you, or call 07766 919630 if it is urgent.
