Bamboo is a popular choice for screening a seaside garden, and it does cope with the wind off the Bristol Channel. The trouble is that it also does very well at escaping. We remove bamboo in Barry by cutting the canes down and digging out the rhizomes and roots underneath.
Whether it is a thick wall of canes at the back of a Victorian terrace or a clump that has crept across a newer estate garden, we will have a look, tell you what we think needs to come out, and then clear it properly.

Sea winds are hard on garden plants, so people reach for something tough that makes a quick screen. Bamboo fits that bill. In and around Barry it often sits alongside conifers and Leylandii hedging, put in as a windbreak or to hide a neighbour's view. A few years on, it is spreading through the lawn and borders and pushing at the edges of the garden.
Running bamboo moves by rhizome, sending thick woody stems sideways under the soil, and new canes appear metres from the original plant. Clumping bamboo is better behaved but still needs the right treatment if you want it gone. Knowing which kind you have shapes how we go about removing it, and how much digging we expect to be doing around the rest of your planting.

We begin by cutting the canes down to ground level and taking them out of the way. Next comes the digging, which is the real work: lifting the rhizome mat and tracing roots outward until we reach clean soil. Where bamboo has grown into a mixed boundary with conifers, we dig carefully so we do not disturb the other planting more than needed.
We take away all the canes, roots and soil that cannot stay. Barry gardens range from tight Victorian and Edwardian plots to wider estate gardens, so we plan the job around your access. If you would like the area reseeded or planted afterwards, say so and we can talk through what suits, whether that is turf, fresh planting, or leaving the ground to settle for a season.
The most reliable protection is thorough digging in the first place, followed by a watchful eye through the next growing season. New shoots should be pulled or cut as soon as they show, before they have a chance to build up strength. If you are clearing bamboo in Barry and want a follow-up visit to check, just ask. We also cover Penarth, Dinas Powys, Rhoose and Sully.

Running bamboo spreads through underground stems called rhizomes, and stopping it means digging them out thoroughly rather than just cutting down the canes.

Spreading bamboo can lift paving, push into wall joints and block drains, so it helps to know which type you have and when to act.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.

No. Bamboo copes well with coastal wind, and the underground rhizomes carry on regardless. A clump near the coast can spread as freely as one anywhere else, so it still needs digging out if it has got out of hand.
Yes, we remove the canes, roots and soil that cannot stay on site. Bamboo is bulky and awkward to dispose of, which is part of the reason people put the job off. We aim to leave your garden clear when we finish.
