Barry gets plenty of wind off the Bristol Channel, and the salt in it works on timber, nails and fixings year after year. A fence that was fine a few winters ago can be leaning by now. We fit new fences and replacement panels and posts across Barry, building them to stand up to the coastal weather and finishing the job with the old fence cleared away.
Whether the garden is a Victorian terrace backyard or part of a newer estate, we can help. Tell us what is there now and what you would like in its place, and we will suggest a sensible height, style and layout, then agree the details with you before any timber is cut or posts are set.

A fence takes the full force of a gust when there is nothing to break it, and gardens close to Barry Island and the old docks have very little shelter. We lean towards solid, well-set posts and sturdy close-board construction for exposed plots, because heavier timber and deeper footings cope better with strong winds than light panels do. That is the thinking behind most of our work here.
Salty air also speeds up rust on poor fixings, so we pay attention to how each panel is held in place. Posts stand on firm ground, gravel boards keep the lower edge off wet soil, and we check the line as we go. We will tell you honestly what to expect from any fence, since weather decides the rest. We keep the fixing neat and secure.

Barry's Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have narrow back gardens with high boundary walls on one side and tired fencing on the other. Newer estates have shorter, more open plots. Each needs something different, from a tall privacy fence beside a neighbour to a lower, neater one along the front. We look at your layout and suggest heights and styles that suit it.
Old fences are often mixed together over the years, with panels of different sizes patched in. When we replace a run, we aim for a consistent finish, with posts evenly spaced and panels lined up. If part of the fence has to meet an existing wall or hedge, we cut and fit around it so there is no gap. It is a small point but it shows.
Before fencing in Barry, we suggest speaking to the neighbours about the boundary line and who is responsible for it. Height limits can apply, especially at the front of a property or beside a road, so it is worth checking with the council. When that is settled we take out the old fence and fit the new one. We also cover Penarth, Rhoose, Dinas Powys and Sully.

For privacy, solid timber close-board or well-made lapped panels on firm posts usually work well, provided the fence suits your wind, slope and boundary.

Timber is the familiar, adaptable choice for most gardens, while composite trades a higher outlay for less upkeep, so the right answer depends on your priorities.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Solid close-board fencing with firmly set posts is often a good choice where wind is strong. Panel fencing can work in sheltered corners. We look at your plot and say which we would use, and why, before any work begins.
Sometimes. If the panels are sound and can be lifted out, we fit new posts and put them back. Often the panels are tired too, so we check on site and give you a straight answer. We would rather not replace anything that does not need it.
Signs include leaning, rotting at the base, loose panels and posts that move when pushed. One bad post may be fixable, but several together usually means it is time to replace the whole run. A quick check from us can tell you which applies.
