This Cwmbran photo catches a fence replacement in the middle of the job. The old section has been taken out, and new timber posts and rails are standing in the gap, with no boards on them yet. It is a useful look at the framework that every timber fence relies on.

On the left, an older close-boarded fence with a pale timber capping carries on beside the gap. In the middle are two upright posts joined by three horizontal rails, with a long gravel board along the bottom. Behind them there is a heap of old timber and debris that has not yet been moved. A chainsaw and loose timber lie on the lawn, and one of us stands by the posts. The brick end of the house on the right is covered in ivy and a ladder is fixed against the wall.
A fence is only as sound as its posts. They are set firmly in the ground and checked for being upright before any rails or boards go on, because errors in the frame show up along the full length of the fence later. Because this is a join between old and new, the new section needs to line up with the existing fence in height and position. Taking the old debris away at the end leaves the garden clear and the boundary closed.
