This Cwmbran job is a small side garden beside a brick house. A tall, leafy shrub rises from the corner behind a seating area, with a gravel floor, pots and a planter beside it. The photo shows a full, rounded shape with nothing straggling over the path or windows.

In a narrow garden like this every part of the plant is close to something, whether that is the window, the gutter or the gravel seating. We take it back a little at a time, starting at the top, then trimming the sides in line with the wall. Cutting just above a leaf joint helps the shrub fill out again.
Even a single shrub throws off a good pile of cuttings, and on gravel they can be hard to rake up. We cover the seating or lift the furniture out first, so leaves do not end up in the pots. Check for nesting birds before cutting a thick evergreen in spring or early summer, and leave any section where there is an active nest.
