Monmouth is a town of period houses, long walled and hedged gardens and tall trees, where the Wye and the Monnow run close by. Fences here often sit alongside old brick, mature hedging and long-standing planting, so the work needs a lighter touch than on a bare new estate. We fit and replace garden fencing in Monmouth with care for what is already there.
Whether you need privacy, a stronger boundary or a neat replacement for rotten panels, we can look at the garden, talk through a sensible approach, and agree the details with you before any timber is ordered or the old fence is touched.

Many Monmouth gardens have a mixture of boundaries: part brick wall, part hedge, part tired fence. We plan new fencing so that it joins neatly to what is staying, with posts positioned clear of wall footings and hedge roots, and with ends finished tidily rather than butted up awkwardly against a different material or left with a visible gap. Small details like that make the finished fence look right.
Tall hedges are a feature of the town, and a fence beside one needs room. We leave a gap where we can so the hedge can grow and the timber can dry, and we are happy to trim back overhanging growth before we start. That keeps the new fence cleaner and easier to look after over the years, and avoids damage from rubbing branches.

A period house deserves a fence that looks right beside it. Close-board gives a classic, solid line that suits most older properties, while panel fencing works well where a simpler finish is wanted. We talk through height, finish and post style with you, along with practical points like gravel boards and caps that help the timber last and shed water. Nothing is hidden.
Larger gardens sometimes call for a mix: a taller, private section by a patio or the road, and a lower, more open one elsewhere so that views across the garden are kept. We can plan a continuous run in Monmouth that changes character in sensible places, with clean joins between each section so it reads as one boundary. We will sketch it out first.
Older Monmouth properties can have unclear boundaries, so it is wise to check ownership and talk to the neighbour before work begins, and to ask the council about height limits, especially near the road or in sensitive areas. When the new fence is up, we take the old one away so nothing is left behind. We also cover Dixton, Overmonnow, Rockfield and Trellech.

For privacy, solid timber close-board or well-made lapped panels on firm posts usually work well, provided the fence suits your wind, slope and boundary.

Timber is the familiar, adaptable choice for most gardens, while composite trades a higher outlay for less upkeep, so the right answer depends on your priorities.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.
Read the guide →Yes, we do this regularly. We keep posts clear of the wall footings and finish the ends so the fence meets the wall neatly. If the wall is fragile, we will talk it through before working near it.
Leave a gap between hedge and timber where you can, and trim the hedge regularly. A hedge pushing on a fence traps damp and puts weight on the panels. We can cut the hedge back before fitting new fencing.
Limits depend on where the fence stands and whether the property is in a protected area. Boundaries beside roads are usually more restricted. We suggest checking with the council before ordering, and we can plan the fence around what is allowed.
