Period houses and large gardens suit Monmouth well, and they also suit ivy. We cut it back and remove it from house walls, garden walls, fences, tall hedges and mature trees, taking care around old brick and stone, and we clear the waste away when the job is done.
Monmouth sits where the Wye and the Monnow meet, close to the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean, so damp air and woodland are never far off. We also cover Rockfield, Dixton, Overmonnow and Trellech, and will happily come and look at your property.

Walls on older Monmouth properties can be soft, with lime mortar that does not take kindly to being pulled at. We do not tear ivy away from them. We cut the stems at the base, let the growth die back where we can, and then remove it carefully in sections, so the face of the brick or stone is disturbed as little as possible.
Ivy can also hide a lot on a period frontage or garden wall: cracked pointing, loose bricks, blocked gutters, gaps around window frames. Taking it back lets you see the real condition of the surface, and we will mention anything we notice so you can decide whether it needs a builder. That is useful whether you are selling, repairing or simply tidying up.

Large gardens usually mean tall hedges and well-grown trees, and ivy runs through both. In a hedge, we cut the ivy stems carefully so the hedge plants are not pulled apart. Around the base of a tree, we cut right through the stems, which stops the ivy feeding upwards. Garden walls and sheds close by get the same treatment, and gutters are checked for blockage as we go.
Ivy on a very tall tree cannot always be removed by someone working from the ground, and we will be straight about that. If you have a mature tree in a Monmouth garden that needs more than ivy clearance, we can look at that separately and tell you what we would suggest, so the ivy job and any tree work are planned apart.
After the main growth is removed, sticky roots may stay on stone and brick and take time to come away. We will tell you what your walls are likely to look like before we begin. We also check for nesting birds first at your Monmouth property, and we take all the cut material away when we leave, so nothing is left on the drive.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Monmouth.

Ivy comes off brickwork most cleanly when it is cut at the base and left to die back first, rather than ripped away while still alive.

Tree surgery is priced job by job rather than from a fixed list, so this guide explains what moves the cost up or down and how to get a firm figure.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.
Read the guide →We do not pull living ivy off by force, because that is what lifts pointing. We cut the stems at the base and remove growth gently. Soft old mortar may still show marks, and we will tell you before we start.
Usually, yes. We cut the ivy stems and ease out what we can reach without tearing the hedge. Where ivy has smothered a hedge for a long time, the plants may look thin until they recover. Either way, you will know before we begin.
We work in most weather, but wet ground, slippery slopes and soaked walls can change how we approach a job. If conditions are poor, we will say so and suggest a better time, rather than rush a cut on a wall that is too wet to work on safely.
