If ivy is taking over a wall, fence or outbuilding at your Maesteg home, we can cut it back and clear it away. We work on stone, brick, timber and trees, and we take the cut growth with us so you are not left with a pile in the garden.
Maesteg runs along the Llynfi valley with woods on the slopes above, so ivy has plenty of cover and moisture. We also cover Caerau, Nantyffyllon, Pontycymmer and Llangynwyd, so tell us where your property is and we will let you know how we can help.

The damp air of a valley suits ivy very well. Stems run along terrace walls, up garden steps and over the sides of outbuildings, and the leaves hold moisture against the surface. Over time that can darken masonry, loosen mortar and make a fence feel soft where it meets the ground. A cleared wall also dries out far better in wet weather.
Many Maesteg gardens slope steeply from the back door, so walls are tall on one side and low on the other. Ivy tends to run up the tall side and over the top into the neighbouring plot. We cut it at the base and remove the growth from both faces wherever we can reach. Maesteg walls like these deserve a proper look once the ivy is gone.

We begin by walking the boundary with you, checking what the ivy is climbing and working out how to move around safely on the slope. Cutting the stems at the base comes first, then we remove the growth in sections, taking care with old pointing, loose stones and weak fence timber. We also keep an eye on the slope, so nothing is dropped onto the path below.
Roots left on stone can stay for a long time, and we will not pretend otherwise. If birds are nesting in the ivy, we stop work on that section and speak to you about timing. Once the main growth is clear, we gather the cuttings and take them away from the property. That keeps the garden tidy. We leave the path clear.
With woodland close to so many Maesteg gardens, ivy can run from the trees down onto your boundary, and the other way round. We can cut ivy at the base of garden trees, though a large tree on a bank may need a proper look, and we will advise before doing more. We would rather give you honest advice than overreach.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Maesteg.

Ivy comes off brickwork most cleanly when it is cut at the base and left to die back first, rather than ripped away while still alive.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.
Read the guide →Ivy likes shade, damp and something to climb. Valley gardens with walls, wooded slopes and fences give it all three, so it spreads quickly if left. Cutting it back early keeps the job smaller. Keeping on top of it each year is far easier than clearing a whole wall.
It can push into joints and hold moisture against the stone, which does not help a tired wall. Taking the ivy off lets you see the real state of the pointing, and we will tell you what we notice.
Not necessarily. We cut the stems at the base and then remove growth where it is safe to do so. On masonry, we may leave stubborn parts to dry out first so they come away more easily. We explain this at the visit.
