Large gardens are one of the pleasures of living in and around Cowbridge, but they give ivy a lot of ground to cover. We cut it back and remove it from walls, fences, outbuildings, hedges and trees, then clear the waste so your garden is left looking orderly.
Many Cowbridge properties back onto farmland or have long field-edge boundaries, and ivy loves them. We also cover Llanblethian, Llantwit Major, Llandough and St Hilary, so if you are on the edge of the Vale, we are happy to come out and look.

A big garden means a lot of boundary, and ivy can run along a wall or hedge line for many metres before anyone notices how far it has gone. It thickens as it spreads, adds weight to fences and can push garden walls out of shape where it finds a way into the joints. We can tell you early on whether the wall is worth saving as it stands.
On a long run in Cowbridge we usually work along the line in sections, cutting the stems at the base first and then taking the growth away in manageable pieces. That keeps the job organised, avoids dragging heavy ivy across lawns and borders, and lets you see how the boundary looks as we go. If the ivy has been holding a wall together, we will point that out before we take it down.

Ivy in a hedge is a different matter from ivy on a wall. It can smother the hedge plants beneath, so we cut the ivy stems carefully and take out what we can without tearing at the hedge itself. Sheds, garages and old outbuildings are treated in a similar way, and we watch for loose felt and rotten timber. Gutters and roof edges get a look too.
Boundary trees around Cowbridge are often tall and mature. We cut the ivy off at the base of the trunk, which stops it feeding the growth above, and we check for nesting birds before any cutting starts. If a tree needs more than ivy clearance, such as deadwood taken out or a branch reduced, we will say so and explain why it matters.
Once the ivy is cut and cleared, we take the waste away with us and leave the area swept. Ivy stuck to masonry can take time to loosen, so a Cowbridge wall may show root marks for a while afterwards. We tell you that before we begin, so you are not surprised by how the wall looks once the leaves are gone.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Cowbridge.

Ivy comes off brickwork most cleanly when it is cut at the base and left to die back first, rather than ripped away while still alive.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.
Read the guide →Yes. For a long boundary we can work in sections, cutting each run at the base and clearing it before moving on. If you would rather spread the work out, tell us and we will plan it around your garden.
We cut the ivy stems carefully and avoid tearing at the hedge plants. A hedge that has been smothered for a long time may look thin once the ivy is gone, so it is worth knowing that beforehand.
Cutting stems at the base of a low trunk is simple, but removing high ivy from a tall tree is not a job to improvise. We can deal with it safely and check the tree as we work.
