Ivy can look harmless on an old wall until it starts working into the pointing, filling the gutters or swamping a fence. We cut back and remove ivy from walls, fences, sheds, chimneys and trees in Carmarthen and the Towy valley, working in a sensible order and clearing everything away when we finish.
Carmarthen has plenty of stone houses and large rural gardens, and ivy gets a firm hold on both. We also cover Llangunnor, Johnstown, Nantgaredig and Abergwili, so if your property sits outside the town itself, just get in touch and tell us where it is.

Stone houses, garden walls and old field boundaries give ivy exactly what it wants: rough surfaces and small gaps to push into. Once it reaches the top of a wall it can spread across the roofline, into the gutters and along neighbouring fences, and what began as a single stem soon becomes a thick, heavy mat that is hard to shift. Clearing it before it reaches the roofline is a much smaller job.
In a market town surrounded by farmland, ivy also climbs the mature trees and hedges that line many Carmarthen gardens. The weight and density of that growth can catch the wind and make an old tree harder for the owner to judge by eye. We look closely at what the ivy is climbing before we decide how to tackle it. Where the trunk is hard to see, we clear a band at ground level so the bark can be inspected.

We start by cutting the stems at the base, so the growth above is cut off from its roots and can begin to die back. Where it is safe and sensible, we then remove the loose growth in sections, working carefully so we do not pull at weak pointing, old render or tired fence panels on your Carmarthen boundary. Loose growth is bagged as we go so it does not drop into the next garden.
On stone and brick the sticky root pads can stay behind and take time to come away. We will tell you honestly what is likely to remain on your wall once the main growth is gone, rather than promise a clean finish. We also check for nesting birds before cutting, and leave that section alone if we find any. A fence or wall that is already fragile gets lighter handling.
Ivy often hides cracked pointing, loose slates, damaged fence posts or a leaning wall, and the first sign of a problem may only appear once it is cut away. If we spot something while working at your Carmarthen property, we will point it out so you can decide what to do about it in your own time. That might be a loose slate, a leaning post or a gap in the pointing.

Ivy comes off brickwork most cleanly when it is cut at the base and left to die back first, rather than ripped away while still alive.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.
Read the guide →Cutting the stems at the base does not harm the wall, but pulling living ivy off by force can take pointing with it. We let the cut growth die back where we can and remove it gently. Some root marks may stay on the stone for a while.
Yes. We cut the ivy stems at the base of the trunk so the growth above is cut off from the ground. It is a sensible first step on mature trees, and it lets you see the bark and branches properly.
Yes, we clear the cut material and take it away with us, leaving the area tidy. If you would rather keep some for a compost heap or a wildlife pile, tell us before we start and we will leave it for you.
Tell us what needs doing and where. We will come back to you, or call 07766 919630 if it is urgent.
