Gardens on the edge of Cowbridge tend to be generous, with big boundary trees, field hedges and farmland close by. Those trees give shelter and privacy, but their lower branches can reach over driveways, lanes and lawns until you have to duck beneath them. We keep the work tidy and the tree looking like itself.
Crown lifting trims the canopy up from below, so you get headroom and light without losing the tree. We cut cleanly, keep its natural shape and only take what is needed. Because gardens here are generous, there is usually room to work properly and leave the plot neat.

A tree planted on a boundary can look modest for years, then quietly spread across a path, a neighbour's drive or the lane outside. In the Vale of Glamorgan, many of these trees are oaks, ashes and field maples that have had plenty of time to grow. Their lowest limbs are heavy and often sag further in wet weather. Where a tree overhangs a neighbour's land, we only cut back to the boundary line and talk to you first about anything beyond it.
Lifting the crown over a lane or drive stops vehicles clipping the branches and reduces the chance of a limb coming down. It also helps keep relations easy with neighbours, since overhanging growth is one of the commonest things people disagree about. Our work in Cowbridge often begins with a quick walk along the boundary, to see whether the whole line needs attention or only the worst tree.

We start by walking round the tree with you and agreeing the height you want clear. Then we remove the lowest branches in order, small ones first and larger limbs in sections, cutting back to the branch collar each time. Everything is cleared away and chipped or taken off site, depending on what you prefer. Cowbridge gardens often have lawns and borders that we are keen to protect, so we lay out where the branches will land before the first cut.
A light lift is often enough, especially on a younger tree. On a bigger specimen we spread the cuts around the canopy so it does not look one-sided. The tree should still look like itself afterwards, just with more air and space underneath. Removing a branch properly takes a few minutes of looking and then one clean cut, which is why we prefer to spend time on the first part.
Cowbridge has a historic centre, and some trees here are protected, so we check for preservation orders and conservation area rules before work begins. If consent is needed, we help you understand what to ask for. We also work in Llanblethian, Llantwit Major, Llandough and St Hilary, with the same checks in each place. Older trees close to the main street or on historic plots deserve extra care, and where we are unsure of the status of a tree, we say so before work.
We work across South Wales. Pick your town to see how crown lifting works locally.

Crown lifting raises the canopy by removing low branches, while crown reduction makes the whole tree smaller, so choosing the right one depends on your problem.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.
Read the guide →Yes. We lift the canopy to give clear headroom over the lane or drive, so lorries, vans and farm vehicles can pass without catching branches. We agree the height with you first and stay within what is healthy for the tree.
No. Topping cuts off the top of the tree and harms it. Crown lifting only removes the lowest branches, leaves the upper canopy untouched and keeps the tree's natural shape. It is a much gentler way to gain clearance.
We clear up as we go. Smaller material is chipped, and larger logs can be left for you to use or taken away. Just tell us what you would like before we start and we will leave the area tidy.
