Caerphilly lies below its castle and the mountain, and its streets climb the hillside through terraces, newer estates and larger gardens. Trees on those slopes grow outwards towards the light, so their lowest branches can end up across paths, roofs and windows. A crown lift raises the canopy and gives the space back, without taking the character from the tree.
We cut with care and leave the tree in balance, ready to carry on growing well. We would rather take a little less and get it right than strip the lower crown and leave it looking bare for years.

A tree on higher ground often leans over the garden below, so the lowest branches are level with a bedroom window or hanging above the roof of a shed or garage. Lifting the crown takes those branches out of the way of your Caerphilly home. It also reduces leaf fall in gutters and makes it easier to reach the side of the house for painting, window cleaning or repairs.
We choose which branches to remove by looking at the whole tree from several angles. Branches that cross, rub or grow downwards usually go first, and then the ones directly in the way. Each one is cut back to the collar, leaving no stubs. Heavier limbs are lowered in stages so the weight is controlled on a sloping garden and nothing damages the beds, the lawn or the fence.

Some Caerphilly gardens are large and merge into wooded slopes. Trees in these settings can be tall, with lower limbs that have long since gone out of reach, and a lift may be as much about letting in daylight as clearing a path. A wide, low branch in a big garden can darken a whole corner. Raising the canopy lets the lawn and borders dry out and gives grass and planting a better chance of staying healthy through the wetter months.
We take a measured approach, because removing too many lower branches weakens a tree and can leave it top heavy. On the hillside, where exposure to wind is real, we keep a generous proportion of living crown. If a lift will not give you the clearance you need, we will say so honestly and suggest an alternative that the tree can cope with.
A tree in Caerphilly may be covered by a protection order, or stand in a conservation area, and we check this before we cut. We stay out of the nesting season as well. We cover Bedwas, Machen, Senghenydd, Llanbradach and Nelson too, and after the work we clear all the branches, leaving paths and drives ready to use.
A few jobs we have completed. We also work in and around Caerphilly.
Tree FellingWe felled and cut up trees in a Caerphilly back garden, chipping the branches and leaving the plot cleared.

Crown lifting raises the canopy by removing low branches, while crown reduction makes the whole tree smaller, so choosing the right one depends on your problem.

There is no single perfect month for every tree, but winter suits many species, and this guide shows how timing, nesting birds and weather affect the choice.
Read the guide →It may reduce them, because the lowest branches are no longer hanging near the roof. It will not stop leaf fall altogether, as the upper crown still drops leaves, so gutters will still need clearing from time to time, though usually less often than before.
We can lift branches hanging over your side, and work on the tree itself if it belongs to you or the owner agrees. Slopes need careful planning for lowering limbs, and we look at that before we begin.
If the problem is low branches in the way, a lift is usually enough. If the whole tree is too big or too heavy, a reduction or thinning may be better. We will look and tell you plainly which suits.
